CANONSBURG, Pa. -- Even when he's just volunteering, Darius Kasparaitis can't seem to resist a little physical play.
More local women are skating into hockey action every year, and the Penguins defenseman is teaching several of them about the game as part of the Pittsburgh Puffins' "Mothers of Hockey" program.
Skating and puck-handling are all part of the summer sessions at the Iceoplex at Southpointe, but one student took an unexpected bump Wednesday when Kasparaitis tried to steal her biscuit.
It wasn't exactly an Eric Lindros hit, but she went right down to the ice.
"It was an accident," a smiling Kasparaitis claimed. "I tried to poke the puck out, and she just fell. There were no referees out there."
Still, Puffins founder Joanne DeFazio told WTAE Action Sports that she couldn't think of a better teacher.
"He is phenomenal out there. Just wonderful," she said.
