UPMC Bedford To Offer Help To Deaf

Video System Gives Interpretive Help

UPDATED: 4:33 p.m. EDT May 22, 2001

UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital in Everett, Pa., will become the first in the state to offer a new interactive video system for deaf patients.

The system, developed in Pittsburgh, will allow a deaf person and a sign language interpreter to view each other through two-way video.

The interpreter can relay the patient's needs to doctors and medical workers and vice-versa.

An interpreter shortage has caused some patients to wait hours for help at hospitals.
