A man driving through a bridge construction area said bits and pieces of the span rained down on his car, causing damage.

Ron Miller said he was driving under the Homestead Grays Bridge near the Waterfront shopping district when pieces of a sludgy mixture hit his sport-utility vehicle.

WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Shannon Perrine said the substance appeared to be wet cement.

The debris did not injure Miller, but he said it scratched the body of his car and cracked the windshield.

He said he talked to the construction workers, who said there was nothing they could do.

Miller has filed a report with Homestead police, and the project manager told Channel 4 Action News that he will talk to Miller about his vehicle.

"It's pretty much a mess. There's no safety nets or anything to catch anything they may have worked on there. And it's a hazard," Miller said. "I think I got it lightly, but somebody could really get hurt."

In fact, there are nets on the underside of the bridge, but they do not cover the entire width of the deck, Perrine reported.

A road sign informs drivers that traffic under the bridge is restricted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week, but it does not list a reason.
