PAT: Higher Costs For North Shore Connector Won't Derail Project

The Port Authority said higher than anticipated costs won't derail plans for the new North Shore connector.

PAT wants to construct twin tunnels under the Allegheny River and connect the downtown T-lines to the North Shore.

Bids were opened earlier this month for the proposed $393 million contact.

PAT is now exploring ways to make it the difference -- especially since groundbreaking could be just months away.

"I would think the ideal time would be early summer -- May, June into July -- we'd like to start it probably before the All Star Game," said PAT CEO Dennis Veraldi.

The Port Authority will spend the next week analyzing the money situation.

The board also approved federal grant applications to help fund the project.
