Westinghouse High Student Shot; Police Locate Car

POSTED: 8:38 am EST February 21, 2006
UPDATED: 6:11 pm EST February 21, 2006

Police said they have found the car they believed was used in a shooting outside a local high school on Tuesday.

The suspect's car -- a silver Dodge Intrepid -- was found in the 6800 block of Kelly Street on Tuesday afternoon, Channel 4 Action News reporter Sheldon Ingram said.

Police said the car was now in police custody and had been stolen from outside the city.

A 10th-grade student was shot and critically wounded outside Westinghouse High School in Homewood on Tuesday morning.

The unidentified male student was dropped off by somebody at about 7:45 a.m. Another vehicle then pulled up, and shots were fired out of the rear passenger window, according to Pittsburgh Public Schools Police Chief Bob Fadzen.

"(The shooter) was circling the block looking for him. When he got out of the truck he was in, they opened up on him," Fadzen said.

City police said shell casings from an assault-style rifle were found outside the school, near the intersection of Gerritt and Monticello streets. The shooting also left bullet marks on a wall near the side entrance.

Surveillance video from cameras posted outside the school may provide more clues about the shooter and the car, Pittsburgh Police Chief Dom Costa said.

The injured 16-year-old has not been identified. He was last reported to be in stable condition at UPMC Presbyterian, with gunshot wounds to the thigh and buttocks.

Westinghouse was in a modified lockdown situation, meaning that extra security was placed in and around the building, according to a spokeswoman for Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Last week, at an Urban League meeting in Shadyside, Mayor Bob O'Connor announced a new initiative with police to create 1,000-foot "safety zones" around city schools. The Westinghouse shooting happened within the suggested parameters of such zones.
