A car being pursued by police collided with a sport utility vehicle in Pittsburgh's Greenfield section on Sunday afternoon, leaving one person dead, WTAE Channel 4's Timyka Artist reported.

Police said they first tried to pull over 41-year-old Richard L. Rutherford for driving erratically in Hazelwood, but Rutherford took off.

A short time later, Rutherford crossed the center lane of Greenfield Avenue and smashed into the oncoming SUV, police said.

Twenty-five years ago, Rutherford was called "Ricky" -- a runaway from Garfield who ended up testifying in one of the region's most sensational murder cases. Team 4 investigator Paul Van Osdol has the details here.

Rutherford's passenger, 41-year-old Semone Byers, died after being taken to UPMC Presbyterian.

Rutherford was also taken to UPMC Presbyterian. He was reportedly in critical condition.

Two adults in the SUV went to the hospital in stable condition, and three young children went to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh for observation.
