C4A: Be Aware Of Shipping Dates For Holiday Gifts

The following report by Call 4 Action reporter Meghan Jones first aired Dec. 16, 2005, on Channel 4 Action News at 5 p.m.

Online holiday shopping has grown 30 percent over the last year.

And if you are one of the millions of Americans turning to your computer to fulfill your gift list, be aware of how long it will take to receive your package -- if you want it before Dec. 25.

"For FedEx ground, Dec. 16 is our further distance points and from a ground point of view. That's when you want to think about curtailing your shipping," said Scott Ray of FedEx Ground.

That means make your purchases now -- but be smart about it.

Check out comparison Web sites like pricegrabber.com or froogle.com to get the best price.

Your next stop should be planetcoupons.com, where you can get online coupons, more price comparison, coupons and rebates.

Why are there so many good deals out there?

This year, online retail sales are expected to reach $20 billion in merchandise.

"We're seeing retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, and Home Depot showing very dramatic gains in traffic to their sites as well as sales," said Gian Fulgonia, an Internet researcher.

That large volume translates into good news for consumers this year. Most retailers are offering free shipping -- but remember to keep in mind how long it will take packages to arrive.

If you can't decide on a gift until next week, you will probably have to pay -- the free shipping offers will be over.

"Our express organization will accept packages up to the Dec. 22 for overnight delivery," said Ray.

Some online retailers are planning to extend free shipping until late next week.

But, you will need to check the Web site where you make your purchases to see when their free shipping ends.
