Pittsburgh was prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Katrina evacuees as early as Wednesday.

But are the evacuees coming to Pittsburgh, after all?

Gov. Ed Rendell, attending Pittsburgh's annual Labor Day parade, said he expected Allegheny County to begin receiving its first wave of families displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

The county was prepared to accept about 300 people over the next week, Chief Executive Dan Onorato told Channel 4 Action News.

The Pittsburgh Project, a social services agency in the city's Perry Hilltop section, was expecting evacuees at its North Charles Street facility as early as Wednesday.

But Wednesday, Pittsburgh's status was changed -- the city is "on standby."

The County held a 4 o'clock news conference Wednesday to discuss the status of the evacuees.
