It is an important day for the North Shore Connector, a big transportation project that has been in the works for some time now.

The first step will be to build a tunnel to carry the "T" – Pittsburgh’s 25-mile light rail system -- under the Allegheny River.

Bids opened today for the $393 million project.

Critics warn construction will cost too much and won't meet the area's greatest transportation needs.

The federal government is prepared to give $217 million to the tunnel project.
