The father of a man accused of killing five people in an April shooting spree has sent his son photographs of the outside of the Allegheny County Jail, where he is incarcerated, police said Friday.
Allegheny County Police Superintendent Ken Fulton said a routine
check of mail to Richard Baumhammers discovered three photographs
of the outside of the jail sent to him by his father, Andrejs
Baumhammers, of Mt. Lebanon.
"Right now, we feel it's a violation of jail policy," said
Fulton, who explained it is against the rules to send photographs
of the institution to anyone incarcerated there.
Fulton said that he does not know why the photos were sent, but he
does not believe it involved any escape plot.
He said no charges would be brought against Baumhammers' father because sending the
photographs involved not a criminal violation.
He said that Baumhammers will be told that the photographs constituted a
violation of policy.
Baumhammers' lawyer, William Difenderfer, did not return a
telephone call to The Associated Press on Friday.
Baumhammers is charged with killing five people and critically
injuring a sixth on April 28 in Allegheny and Beaver counties.
Police allege he targeted his victims because of their race or
ethnic backgrounds.
Difenderfer has said that he plans to argue that Baumhammers is innocent
by reason of insanity. His trial is scheduled to begin April 9.
