Former world lightweight boxing champion Paul Spadafora can't participate in the state Department of Corrections' boot camp program.

Spadafora, serving time for shooting fiancee Nadine Russo in October 2003, could have been paroled before the end of the year if he had been admitted to the six-month program.

Prison officials want "The Pittsburgh Kid" to complete a violence-prevention program with anger-management classes before he can be considered for boot camp again, DOC spokeswoman Sheila Moore said.

Spadafora pleaded guilty to a second-degree felony assault charge in December. Judge Jeffrey Manning gave the boxer 21 months to five years, but also recommended him for Quehanna Motivational Boot Camp in Clearfield County.

If Spadafora completes the violence-prevention program, he could reapply for boot camp in December and be paroled in June 2006, Moore said.
