Hundreds of items found new homes Sunday after an auction at a longtime Homestead bar that's destined for demolition.

Chiodo's Tavern, located just off the Homestead Grays Bridge, had been owned by Joe Chiodo and his family since 1947.

A development company that now controls the land plans to build a Walgreen's drugstore in place of the bar, so the 87-year-old Chiodo decided to retire and close up shop earlier this month.

Over the years, the bar collected hundreds of mementos from customers, such as football helmets and bayonets. Chiodo auctioned many of them off on Sunday.

Someone paid $450 to get the recipe for the "Mystery Sandwich" that has been a staple of Chiodo's menu.

Another person bought a dead rattlesnake preserved in formaldehyde for $80.

Customers bid on everything from sports memorabilia, including a picture of the Homestead Aces baseball team from the 1920s, to dozens of bras that were hung from the ceiling over the years.

"I'm trying to keep a happy outlook today, seeing old friends, but I know tomorrow will be the tears," bartender John Walters said.
