City Council has approved a five-year contract with Pittsburgh's firefighters union that allows the city to close six fire stations, cut 108 empty jobs and freeze salaries for two years.

Mayor Tom Murphy said the new contract will save the city some $20 million over five years.

Firefighters will pay more for health care under the contract, which also cuts four paid holidays and gives each firefighter no more than 20 vacation days a year.

The contract was approved by firefighters last week.

Fire stations targeted for closure are:

  • No. 5 - Webster Avenue - Hill District
  • No. 11 - South Millvale Avenue - Bloomfield
  • No. 21 - Walter Avenue - Allentown
  • No. 25 - Saw Mill Run Boulevard - Overbrook
  • No. 36 - Shadeland Avenue - Marshall-Shadeland
  • No. 39 - Ley Street - Troy Hill
