Possible Shadyside Meth Lab Busted; Ross Cop Arrested

UPDATED: 7:35 pm EST February 25, 2005

The Shadyside section of Pittsburgh is a busy neighborhood, even on a normal day.

It was extra busy Friday morning, as city police and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration moved in on a house where a suspected methamphetamine laboratory was operating.

Four people were arrested in the raid, which happened at about 8:30 a.m. at 514 S. Graham St.

Police said hazardous materials and other items were removed from the three-story house, which is divided into apartments. Police did not say which floor contained the alleged lab.

Two of the suspects are identified as Ross Township Police Officer Michael Baird, 37, and Jennifer Palzan, 21. Both live in the house, according to District Attorney Stephen Zappala's office.

Names of the other two suspects were not available, as of early Friday evening.

Baird was hired in April 1997, according to the Ross Police Web site, but Chief Greg Tenos said Baird has been on disability leave for more than a year.

Tenos told Channel 4 Action News that Baird's tenure with the department has been "troubled." Without elaborating further, Tenos said he is "not surprised" by news of Baird's arrest and hopes to terminate the officer.

All four suspects will be arraigned in city court. It's unclear what charges they will face.

Search warrants for the house were obtained after a two-week investigation sparked by a telephone tip, authorities said.

Duquesne, West Mifflin, Brentwood and state police were also involved in the investigation.
