Call 4 Action: Cell Phone Directory

Five of the six major cell phone companies have decided to create a 411 service that would be available as early as this spring.

Sprint, AT&T, Cingular, T-Mobile and Nextel have all agreed to create a cellular phone 411 service. Verizon Wireless has not.

The service would allow people to pay $1 to get someone else's cell phone number.

Mobile carriers say they are developing this directory to satisfy the needs of small businesses that use wireless phones as their primary means of communication with customers.

The big concern is that your next incoming call could be a solicitation. Despite all the buzz out there, that is not the case right now. Federal law already prohibits telemarketers from calling you on your cell phone.

Call 4 Action reporter Meghan Jones says the participating cell phone carriers have decided to let their customers opt in or out of the 411 listing, just like consumers can do for their landline phones.

If it makes you feel better, you can put your mobile phone number on the Do Not Call registry by calling (888) 382-1222 or going to www.donotcall.gov.

Registering on the Do Not Call list will not prevent your number from being listed on the mobile phone directory. You must ask your wireless company for that.
