Self-Defense Claimed In Squirrel Hill Girlfriend-ShootingPOSTED: 6:16 pm EDT September 15,
2004 PITTSBURGH -- Two days after Lori Hann suffered a fatal gunshot wound in Squirrel Hill, police arrested her boyfriend, Hardy Lloyd.Pittsburgh police said Lloyd confessed during an interrogation, but at a preliminary hearing Wednesday, defense attorney Caroline Roberto argued that her client was defending himself by shooting Hann."These two individuals had a complicated emotional relationship, and there was a lot of anger on her part, and there were some problems that were occurring at the time," Roberto said.Detective George Trosky was the only witness called Wednesday. According to Trosky's testimony, Lloyd said he shot Hann once in the head after she pointed a .357 Magnum revolver at him."The commonwealth has not tried to challenge at all Mr. Lloyd's rendition of what happened, and she pulled a gun on him first," Roberto said.According to testimony, Lloyd also confessed that he was with another woman and showed up late for a date with Hann. When he arrived for the date, Hann was allegedly angry and wanted to end their relationship. They got into Hann's car, where the argument continued.Trosky said Lloyd told police that Hann pointed a gun at him while they were outside a home on Beacon Street, then got out and walked to the front porch of the home.Lloyd said he followed Hann and called out to her, and she turned around with her arms up, so he shot her because he couldn't determine if she still had the gun or not, according to Trosky's testimony.During cross-examination, Roberto questioned whether police knew Lloyd suffered from attention deficit disorder and Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism."Do you think that his health played a role in this at all?" Roberto asked."I do not want to respond to that at this point," Trosky answered. After hearing the testimony, a deputy coroner ordered the case to trial. No date has been set.
