Here is what your neighbors are saying about Martha's sentence: Prison - come on, just look into the "type of prison" she will be going to - more like a mini country club. I hope at this "prison" they have a decent hairstylist, because she sure could use one. I'm sick of seeing that straggly blond hair hanging over her face and constantly in her eyes. I bet she won't be wearing "prison orange" or black and white stripes or prison denims. Come to think of it, orange would not be a very good color for her anyway. She lied - she's guilty, her sentence is too light--and 'supervised probation' after "prison vacation" yeah right. I can see it now, she & her probation officer chatting over tea and crumpets and having their nails done. -Donna - in Fairmont, WV Ms. Stewart was prosecuted for a minor offense that typically would have been a slap on the wrist for a man. Because she is a high-profile businesswoman with loads of cash, someone wanted her taken down a few pegs...she will rise like the phoenix...Nadine, Pittsburgh Well, everyday, more and more of it shows that there are two types of people in this county. The haves and the have nots. The only strange thing is when it comes down to sentencing, the haves don't get it while the have nots do get it. I thought it says "Liberty and Justice for all". I guess it really means Liberty for the Haves, and Justice for the Have Nots. -John I think the sentence she received is absurd. We are now going to, as tax payers, pay for her "sentence" at this country club. I'm even more upset because the Mussels she made last night on the Food Network looked delicious!!! -Larry, Gibsonia I don’t think it was harsh enough. Anyone who would take money from other people who is already one of the richest people in the nation should spend life in jail for the small people they have hurt. -Linn I think the sentence is absolutely ridiculous. She should have received no prison time. Even if she was guilty, (which I don't think she was), justice could better have been served by issuing a large fine. Now taxpayers are going to have to foot the bill for keeping her in prison and I doubt the fine will even cover the cost of keeping there! -Margaret - Richards Landing - Ontario, Canada I am still convinced that Martha will never see the inside of a jail. By the time appeals are over she will probably receive community service work, a small fine, and house arrest (what a terrible place to be). I must say, I think she deserves a little more than that. -Jeannie If Martha was found guilty then she should be sentenced like a guilty person...not like a girlscout !!! I think it's fine that she was sentenced to prison - but I'm disappointed is isn't a longer sentence. Corporate stealing and greed and duplicity and dishonesty MUST cease. Trust and the good of the economy and the country depend on it. If she appeals and her sentence is reduced, that's a terrible precedence for ALL to see. - Dorothy I feel she should NOT have been found not guilty in the beginning.. She was used as a scapegoat and that's all. There are real criminals out there and they get nothing! I will continue to buy her products - I never stopped. - Barbara, Plum What a ridiculous way to waste taxpayer money. Let's see, we know what we have going on in Pittsburgh - imagine New York? You have child molesters, murderers, want-to-be gang members wrecking havoc, bank robbers, rapists - just to name a few unsavory citizens - but justice will be best served by locking Martha Stewart away from society for even six months? Go figure. Hey voters out there - when will we get judges sitting on benches and making some sense of fairness to all of us? When we all decide to vote with some shred of intelligence. -Deborah In my opinion the Martha Stewart sentence is way too light. She probably won't see the inside of the jail. If she were not such a celebrity she would have gotten 5 years instead of 5 months. -Gary I feel that Martha Stewart should not have been sentenced to any prison time; she would best serve the community by working in a shelter that helps displaced homemakers. Sentencing her to prison time is a waste of the taxpayers time and money. I have heard of cases where child molesters; murderers, burglers and other hard core criminals have received less of a sentence than Martha was given. The criminal justice system as a whole needs to be revamped. SJC I am appalled and disgusted. Money talks and definitely paves the way to a lighter and more lenient sentence. If it were me, a middle-aged, middle-income, single mom, I would have been slapped with the maximum penalty and immediately hauled away to jail. And, it wouldn't be the luxury suite Martha will reside in. - Gloria I know this may not be a very popular opinion because their are so many Martha fans out there but I believe that if we imagine Martha as an ordinary everyday person doing the same crime this sentence would not even be anything that would shocking or upsetting to so many people out there.she should be greatful that her sentence was light. She could have served even more time for the crime she committed, and let everyone be reminded that what she did was wrong. She is a very intellgent, talented lady however just because she is wealthy and well known and even well liked, should have no bearing on her sentence. Ask yourself this question, do ordinary people get to waive being turned over to the authorities until their appeal. I read about people sentenced to time in prison everyday that are planning on appealing but they are sent to prison with their appeal pending. I think it's high time for Martha to be treated! like everyone else. If she did the crime let her do the time! She is no different then anyone else in her postion. Why is this land punishing Martha Stewart for what MEN have done for decades. Why is she the scapegoat. Punishment should have been handed out a long time ago and maybe Martha would not have been tempted to do what has been done forever, PROTECT HER INVESTMENTS! -Terri Martha is my friend - treated very unfairly. She has my support! -Polly, in St. Louis, Missouri I can live with the five months in prison. The five months of home confinement I find irksome. Five months confined to an estate in CT. is not what I consider punishment. Five months confined in a shelter for battered women, serving meals and washing dishes is a more suitable punishment. Let her come to grips with the fact that many women don't have the luxury of sitting around coloring sugar cubes with food dye, to give as gifts. The judge's sentence sends a message that there is justice for the rich, and justice for the poor. -Steve, Rockville, CT Who cares? this was a complete waste of time. Look at the amount of profit that she made from the sale....it is miniscule compared to her wealth. If she had jsu theld her stock, she would be even today since the price rebounded. So, she really didn't profit much form the deal. To everyone mad about the short prison sentence, I ask Why should taxpayers pay to clothe and feed a multi millionaire??? Let her buy her way out of the prison term. Forfeit 5 months of her earnings straight to the US coffers, where we need it. i don't care if she never stays one day in prison. -JBL I think that they just wanted to make an example out of her because she is a woman and so successful. The "big boys" of business rarely get blamed or punished for anything. Though I don't think she should have been sentenced at all, I think she was lucky to get only 5 months. - Polianna I seems that if you are a celebrity, Crime Does Pay!I find it totally inconcievable that given the facts in her case, that she should get that light a sentance. Had someone with less media presence committed the same offence, they would have recieved the maximum the law allows. No wonder the peole are getting disgusted with the so called "Role Models of Society" I for one would have voted for the maximum. Too many people in here position consider themselfs above the law. This proves to me that they are above the law. The smack on the hand she recieved is a disgrace. - Emil Copyright 2004 by ThePittsburghChannel. All rights reserved.
