Abandoned Baby's Death Ruled A Murder

Public Funeral Is Thursday

UPDATED: 7:04 a.m. EDT June 8, 2000

A newborn baby girl found dead in a stream near Uniontown was born nearly full-term and alive, according to Fayette County police, WTAE's Marcie Cipriani reports.

Police have now ruled the death as a homicide. They said they have several leads in the case and are investigating school-age girls living in the area.

County coroner Phillip Reilly named the infant Mary, and said that it was hard to determine the exact cause of death.

"Due to the advanced decomposition it was impossible to determine with a degree of confidence and medical accuracy the precise cause of death," Reilly said.

Reilly also said that it's unclear how long the baby was dead. People who live near the creek said that the bag in which she was eventually found had been floating for about a week.

A public funeral for baby Mary will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hawkey Funeral Home in Uniontown.
