The huge crowd expected to hit Market Square for green beer and live music after the annual St. Patrick's Day parade Saturday morning will see some changes from last year.
Department of Public Works crews will erect a 6-foot fence to keep drinkers inside and prevent alcohol from being passed outside the square during the celebration.
"What we intend to do is to allow access only through certain parts of the fence, so officers can monitor people coming and going," Pittsburgh Police Chief Robert McNeilly said.
Coolers and outside alcohol won't be permitted, and arrests will be made for rowdy behavior, McNeilly said.
"We intend to enforce the laws of Pennsylvania and the ordinance of the city of Pittsburgh," McNeilly said. "That includes lewdness and public urination, or anything similar to that."
Drinkers will be glad to know that plans call for twice the usual amount of portable toilets to be provided.
Jeff Joyce, owner of 1902 Tavern and president of the Market Square Assocation, said a second yearly celebration could be added to the calendar if all goes well in March.
"A 'Halfway to St. Patrick's Day' party in Market Square on Sept. 17 is in the planning stages," Joyce said.
