State police troopers in Butler are investigating the death of Clifford Stevenson and searching for his missing roommate.

Stevenson, 56, was found dead at home in Mercer Township around 7:30 p.m. Thursday. An autopsy was scheduled Friday to determine the cause and manner of death.

While police have not released any details of Stevenson's death, his sister-in-law told Channel 4 Action News' Sheldon Ingram that the man was shot in his bedroom. She said she went to his home on William Flynn Highway after he didn't answer phone calls from his daughter, and that's when she saw the body.

"He was an awesome guy," relative Melvin Booher said. "He would give you the shirt off his back, and if he had $10, he would give it to you."

Family members said Stevenson was disabled with respiratory problems and prostate cancer, and large amounts of cash and a life insurance policy are missing.

Police are looking for Smith, who has not been seen since July 27, according to family members. Police said they do not suspect him of any wrongdoing but want to check on his well-being.

Smith is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, 175 pounds, with hazel eyes, thinning gray hair and a bald spot on top. He was believed to be driving a green 1998 Ford Escort with Pennsylvania license plate HMA2597 and discolored paint on the rear of the car.

Anyone who knows where Smith is should call Pennsylvania State Police at 724-284-8100.
