Many of those in attendance at a Thursday night meeting in Lawrenceville to discuss Marcellus Shale drilling didn't even need to speak to express their opinions. Their message was loud and clear on their shirts: "No Marcellus Gas Drilling."

"How much is the 'OK' potential risk when it comes directly to somebody's life or live stock? What is OK?" said one woman at the meeting.

City Councilman Patrick Dowd held the panel discussion at the Teamsters Temple.

Marcellus Shale drillers recently secured leases in the neighborhood, but Pittsburgh City Council has called for a moratorium on drilling while looking for stricter regulations for the drilling industry.

Representatives for Marcellus Shale drilling told those in attendance that they have no plans for Lawrenceville.

"We currently have no plans in the city of Pittsburgh and do not expect to materialize here in the center city of Pittsburgh in the near future," said David Spigelmyer, of the Marcellus Shale Coalition.

While drilling could lead to more jobs, residents expressed concern about chemicals getting into the water.

"I don't care how many jobs we get. I don't care how many roads are destroyed. Once we destroy our water, we cannot live. Period. It won't matter if you have a job. You won't need a job, you'll be dead," said one woman.

Mark and Elizabeth Schneider told Channel 4 Action News Tara Edwards that they formed the Lincoln Place Action Group to stop the drilling from coming to their neighborhood.

"I've seen what they're doing. I've seen the land that they're poisoning. I've seen the people that they're hurting. I've seen that the water that they're poisoning and I've smelt the air and almost passed out," said Schneider.
