State Budget Crunch Squeezing Allegheny CountyFunding For 55 Social Service Progams Dries UpPOSTED: 6:43 p.m. EDT August 2, 2003 PITTSBURGH -- Pennsylvania's budget stalemate is taking its toll on Allegheny County.
County Executive Jim Roddey says funding for 55 social service programs
has run out.
Roddey has called an emergency meeting for Wednesday. He plans to ask the
County Council to transfer funds to keep those programs in operation.
Those programs serve 10,000 people, offering everything from
after-school programs to adult education and counseling.
Roddey, a Republican, has not said where the new money will come
from. Council president Rich Schwartz, a Democrat, said he wants to
take another $300,000 from the county's $24 million reserve fund.
Officials are hoping they will be reimbursed for any reserve funds
spent once new budget legislation is passed by the Legislature.
