Rankin Police Sgt. Says Crash Was A 'Blur'

Suspect Goes To Court, Accused Of Hitting David Grimes' Car

UPDATED: 6:00 pm EDT April 14, 2010

Sgt. David Grimes said he was at an intersection under the Rankin Bridge when he turned his sirens on and stopped to make sure the road was clear before driving to a call in neighboring Braddock.

The rest, said Grimes, was a blur. His police car was struck by another vehicle coming down the ramp.

"I'm still in a lot of pain, doing physical therapy twice a week, trouble sleeping," Grimes said Wednesday. "Hopefully, I'll be back soon."

The suspect -- Brian Sullivan -- waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of drunken driving and aggravated assault Wednesday.

Grimes said he suffered injuries to his neck, back and spine in the March 17 crash.

"All I know is I was spun around," Grimes said.

He told WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Tara Edwards that he was going in and out of consciousness until police from Swissvale arrived.

"They were awesome. They actually were keeping me awake at the scene," Grimes said.

Police said that Sullivan tested above the legal limit for alcohol. He was previously charged with a DUI last year.

Sullivan did not comment to Channel 4 Action News outside court on Wednesday.
