A police source told Channel 4 Action News that a Squirrel Hill man whose body was dumped near a wooded path Monday morning in Northview Heights was likely killed in an act of retribution because of an ongoing feud.

WTAE Channel 4's Shannon Perrine reported that a witness saw three people leave the body behind the Northview Heights Recreational Center around 7 a.m., near an abandoned home off Haslett Street.

"It's scary because the children use that to go up to the bus stops to go to the school," said Bill Mitchell, of Northview Heights.

The victim was identified as Lee Howard Schwartz, 53. Police said he had a gunshot wound and his hands were tied. An autopsy will determine whether he died from the shooting or some other cause.

Managers of the rec center were forced to close the facility while the investigation continued Monday.

"It's open every day," said Mitchell. "It's a food bank. It's a community relief. You get everything from there. The kids play there -- the computer room, food bank, counseling."

"So, it's a busy area?" Channel 4 Action News reporter Janelle Hall asked.

"Yes, ma'am, it is, especially for a body to be put up there," Mitchell said.

Pittsburgh police still haven't said if the victim was killed in the Northview Heights area or was attacked somewhere else and then taken to the neighborhood to be dumped.

"We are asking anyone, if they have any information about why this man was found behind the building shot, if they could give the homicide office a call," Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said.

Perrine reported that Schwartz has a criminal history that includes minor drug and theft charges, but it's not clear why police think he was targeted for death.
