Snow caused the roof collapse at the Rostraver Ice Garden a month ago, the rink's owner said Sunday.

An engineer said a drift had left 5 feet of snow on one side of the roof and 18 inches on the other.

No one was injured when part of the roof came crashing down during a youth hockey tournament. A Zamboni operator was the lone person on the rink at the time.

Owner Jim Murphy said plans are moving ahead to rebuild and re-open.

"We plan on being up and operating by August," Murphy said. "It's not going to be an easy task, but I think it's achievable."

Murphy said the new rink will likely have a prefabricated steel structure over the ice, or possibly an air bubble. Work to remove the debris is scheduled to begin next week.
