Big plans are in the works for Pittsburgh's Allegheny riverfront.

The city is teaming up with real estate firm the Buncher Company to develop 80 acres of land from the Strip District to Highland Park.

"Under this partnership, vacant and underutilized property will really become extensions of existing neighborhoods, and reconnecting them with one another," said Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.

The plan for the 6.5 miles of riverfront property would start with three sites -- one in the Strip District and two in Lawrenceville.

Those involved said the plans won't take away from the Strip District's character.

"We think that it's most important that we work with what's here, rather than bring in something entirely new. We heard that very clearly from the community and also the merchants in the area," said Stephen Quick, of Riverfront Vision Plan.

Resident Allison Hydzik, who frequently walks the river trail with her baby, said the changes will be a welcome addition to the area.

"I've just always wanted it to be more connected and easier to get to and a little more friendly to access. These plans are going to be just great if they come through, especially with her walking soon," said Hydzik.
