Part of Allegheny County is on an air quality alert on Tuesday.

The alert affects about 25,000 people in Clairton, Glassport, Liberty, Lincoln and Port Vue.

The state department of environmental protection issued the alert, which is unusual this early in the year.

The nicer weather with little wind causes particulate matter, which is released into the air from plants, cars, wood stoves and factories, to become stuck, which can put some people at a health risk.

"They're a potential danger to human health because they can be breathed deeply into the lungs and can cause distress for people who have heart or respiratory problems," said Guillermo Cole of the Allegheny County Health Department.

The expected change in weather likely means that the air quality alert will end by Wednesday.
