A person has died and two people were flown to a hospital after a crash in Butler County early Sunday, state police said.

Pennsylvania State Police said two cars collided at about 2:15 a.m. on Route 308 less than a mile north of Tinker Road in Cherry Township.

Troopers said the first car was traveling southbound on Route 308 when it left the roadway for an unknown reason. The driver -- identified as Ryan Mitchell Malachina, 19, of Kennerdell -- lost control of his car and traveled into oncoming traffic head-on, state police said .

State police said Malachina, who was wearing his seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people inside the oncoming car were injured and were flown to area hospitals. State police identified the driver and the passenger, respectively, as Kevin L. Thompson, 32, of Chicora, and Morgan S. Pennington, 48. Neither man was wearing a seat belt, state police said, and their conditions were not immediately known.

Troopers from the Butler barracks continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
