Indiana Soldier Memorialized At Blairsville Service

Flags Fly At Half-Staff For Army Staff Sgt. Glen Stivison Jr.

POSTED: 4:16 pm EST November 21, 2009

Flags at Pennsylvania state facilities flew at half-staff on Saturday in honor of Army Staff Sgt. Glen Stivison Jr., who loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and loved being a soldier.

The Indiana County native joined the Army in 1996. Stivison, a combat engineer, was killed in action in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, on Oct. 15.

Gov. Ed Rendell ordered flags to fly at half-staff Saturday as family and friends gathered for a final salute in Blairsville.

"(We're) honoring a hero. He was a great brother, dad, a great husband, a great soldier, and (he) just deserved to be honored like this," said Carey Stivison, the soldier's sister.

"On behalf of all Pennsylvanians, we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Staff Sergeant Stivison," Rendell said in a statement. "To coincide with the date of his memorial service in Blairsville, we will lower the United States and state flags to show our respect for his loyal service and sacrifice for our country."

Stivison, 34, graduated from Blairsville High School in 1994. He leaves behind a wife, two sons and many other relatives in the Indiana area.
