State police arrested two people and are looking for a third suspect in the beating of a homeless man with poles and clubs as he slept in a tent in a wooded area of Hempfield, Westmoreland County.

Police at the Greensburg barracks said 51-year-old Paul Lance suffered severe injuries to his head, face and torso and had to be flown to an undisclosed hospital after a Nov. 17 attack.

Suspect Hugh James Hawkey Jr. was last seen with a mohawk hairstyle, police said. Anyone knowing his whereabouts should call 724-823-3288.

Police said Benson Perry, 27, of Claridge, and another man have already been arrested.

According to police reports, Lance was sleeping in a tent behind Lynch Field when three men sneaked up on him and began to beat Lance, hitting him repeatedly.

On Monday, police arrested Perry, who they said accused Lance of sexually assaulting his mother.

According to an affidavit, Lance admitted to the assault, but only to stop the attack on him. He later denied sexually assaulting anyone.

Perry faces an aggravated assault charge. He's free on $10,000 bond after his arraignment at District Judge James Falcon's office in Youngwood.

Police did not say what charges would be filed against the second man who was arrested.
