Two dogs died and four others and a man escaped with their lives after a large fire burned two homes in the Natrona Heights area of Harrison Township, Allegheny County.

The fire started Monday morning at one house on Federal Street and spread to a neighboring house, WTAE Channel 4's Sheldon Ingram reported.

"I kicked the kitchen door in, and I made it through the first room of the house, and a big ball of fire hit me and knocked me back," said Jeff Dolmajar, who was working in the area at the time.

Dolmajar and two other men helped the resident of the second home and the dogs get out safely.

"He made it out OK, but we had to go in and get his dogs," said Scott Baker, who also helped. "They were running through the house. They were all over the place."

Nobody was in the first house when it caught fire.

"It's a tragedy, though," said the fire victim, Mike Darci. "You work for something all your life and it's gone in a heartbeat."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

"At least we got our dogs and our life," said Darci.
