NORTH STRABANE TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A minor accident on Interstate 79 in Washington County ultimately sent a man to a Pittsburgh hospital aboard a medical helicopter.
Watch The Report From Jon GreinerPennsylvania State Police out of the Washington barracks said the incident would have been a minor fender-bender if not for a poor choice by one of the drivers.
Troopers said a car rear-ended another car on southbound I-79 near the Houston exit in North Strabane Township.
Traffic backed up as one lane of the highway was shut down, causing another fender-bender near the back of the line.
While Ray Core, 42, of Uniontown, walked into the median to pick up the license plate of his vehicle that was knocked off in the first crash, a car struck him on the berm after the driver lost control.
Core was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in stable condition. No charges were immediately filed.
Police said anyone involved in an accident of this kind should first of all try to pull off the road out of traffic and then walk back to retrieve items.
