PITTSBURGH -- The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office is investigating whether money for a suburban chiropractor's home in an upscale Cranberry Township neighborhood and a vacation home came from money meant for two orphaned children.
Dr. Daniel Pompa has an office called Pompa Health Solutions on Lake Drive in Pine Township. His Web site says that he has been featured on television and radio and has been published. He has declined to comment about the investigation.
WTAE Channel 4's Marcie Cipriani reported that Pompa and his wife became guardians of 7-year-old twins after their father, Leslie Young, killed the mother, Lisa Young, and then himself at the family's home near Sarasota, Fla.
The twins were inside the home at the time of their parents' deaths on Dec. 26, 2003, according to police.
"It's a heartbreaker," the twins' grandmother, Olivia Phillips, told Channel 4 Action News on Friday. Lisa Young was her daughter, and she said Young loved the two children.
The Pompas were given custody of the kids and a $1 million trust fund to maintain until the twins turn 30.
Six years after the fund was established, the $1 million has dropped below $250,000, according to court papers.
The district attorney is tracking the money removed from the fund to determine if it was used for the Pompas' home in Cranberry, a condo in Seven Springs, an interior designer, building supplies, flooring, a dining room table and brass toilet paper holders.
"I've been investigating myself for six years," Phillips said. "I've got a file. I've got quotes, dates, times, paperwork, and I'm waiting for the DA to ask for it. It's all his."
Dr. Bill Cole said he's known Pompa for more than 20 years and watched as he and his wife took in the twins.
"Knowing Dan and Merily the way that I do, they didn't hesitate at all to take these children in. You know, provide a loving home for them. Everything that you could imagine," said Cole.
No charges have been filed against the Pompas. The couple's assets are frozen by District Attorney Stephen Zappala's office while the investigation continues.
