Westmoreland County leaders said almost $2 million in federal economic stimulus funds will go to help prevent homelessness in the county.

On Thursday county officials said the $1.8 million is earmarked for the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program. The program will provide Westmoreland County residents short-term help to avoid homelessness such as hotel vouchers, help with rental and utility payments, help with moving costs and workshops on saving and financial planning.

County leaders said mortgage help, credit and car loans and costs associated with things like food, clothing and transportation will not be covered.

The county also said those in need can call a free, 24-hour help line at 800-222-8848.

The funds will be distributed by Westmoreland County Community Action, the Westmoreland County Housing Authority and the private industry council of Westmoreland-Fayette Inc.
