Oh, Deer! Pittsburgh Business Get Four-Legged VisitorsDeer Crash West View, Monroeville StoresPOSTED: 6:40 pm EDT October 28,
2009 PITTSBURGH -- Seeing a deer crash a local Pittsburgh storefront has become just as common as seeing customers approach the counter in recent weeks. After incidents at a West View business and Monroeville Quiznos in the past two weeks, WTAE Channel 4 Action News anchor Michelle Wright spoke with the Pennsylvania Game Commission to find out why the deer have been running wild."Deer mating season is starting and will peak in mid-November. Deer tend to travel more during this time, and most likely, these incidents happen because the deer get in an urban area -- probably encountering people -- and then starts looking for an escape route and runs into the window thinking it's a way out," said wildlife conservation officer Dan Puhala.Last Thursday, a deer came crashing Weekend Directional Services on Perry Highway in West View, scattering signs, shattering glass and ripping off a toilet seat before it was caught and put-down due to injuries."We just stayed out of its way and let it do its business until the officers got here to take care of it," said operations manager Robert Long. "It kept jumping up trying to get out of this window over here."On Tuesday, another deer smashed through two windows at a Quiznos on Business Route 22 in Monroeville."It was pretty intense," said employee Nicole Zebroski, who added that some people ducked for cover and hid under tables. "She came charging through the back of the store where she got herself trapped back here. She attempted a few times to jump through the glass."The door eventually ran out a back door and into nearby woods.
