Update Expected On Landfill Blamed For Stink At Local SchoolAllegheny Co. School Plagued By StenchPOSTED: 8:26 am EDT October 13,
2009 FINDLAY, Pa. -- The group studying a landfill blamed for causing terrible odors at an Allegheny County school is expected to provide an update on the situation. Before the end of the last school year, neighbors and parents of students who attend Wilson Elementary School in Findlay Township complained of headaches and said that a foul odor from the nearby Imperial Landfill permeated the school.Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection officials ran tests on the air around the school. While the department did find Volatile Organic Compounds, including benzene, in the air, the levels were below what would cause health problems, officials said. The school did install air filters in March, to try and counter the odors from the landfill. On Tuesday night, the Imperial Landfill Citizens Advisory Committee is expected to provide an update on how the issue was addressed over the summer. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the North Fayette Township Community Center meeting room.To read the DEP's report about the school's air quality, visit www.depweb.state.pa.us *Note: this links to a .pdf file.
