Cell Phones Ring For Climate Change 'Wake-Up Call'Activists Set Alarms For 12:18 PM At Downtown Pittsburgh RallyPOSTED: 12:23 pm EDT September 21,
2009 PITTSBURGH -- Climate change activists set their cell phone alarms to go off simultaneously in a noontime protest at a downtown parklet Monday. The group said it's intended as a "wake-up call" for world leaders who will be involved in the G-20 economic summit Thursday and Friday at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.Alarms went off near the corner of Seventh Street and Penn Avenue at exactly 12:18 p.m. to symbolize Dec. 18 -- the last day of the United Nations' conference in Copenhagen, where environmentalists hope a global climate treaty will be reached.Negotiators at Copenhagen will try to strike a deal to cut emissions and prevent temperature increases that could lead to dangerous flooding, sea level rises and storms. They will also try to secure funding to prevent deforestation.Members of 3 Rivers Climate Convergence, Avaaz and the Sierra Student Coalition took part in Monday's action. There was also a flash mob with dancers, music and signs.Related Link: Understanding The G-20
