Man Dies In Somerset County Camper Fire

Woman Sees Flames, Helps 3 Children Escape; Fiance Dies

POSTED: 6:13 pm EDT August 30, 2009

A woman helped three children escape a camper fire early Sunday morning, but was unable to reach her fiance.

Firefighters were called to the Scottyland Campground on Route 653 in Middlecreek Township in Somerset County shortly before 1:45 a.m., according to state police.

When a woman noticed flames inside her camper, she rescued her children and, with people from neighboring campers, called 911 for help. New Centerville volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene, but extreme heat and smoke from the fire prevented them from rescuing the woman's fiance, Gary T. Defrances, 43, of Masontown.

A cause of death remained unknown, pending an autopsy. A state police fire marshal continued to investigate a cause.
