UPDATED: 8:59 am EST March 3, 2003

Fred Rogers, a television icon known for his zip-up cardigan and sneakers and gentle invitations to children to be his neighbor on "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," was buried Saturday after a small, private ceremony.

About 60 relatives, friends and co-workers attended a funeral for Rogers near Latrobe, the city where he was born about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Rogers, who hosted the public television show for more than 30 years, produced the children's show from 1968 to 2000.

He died Thursday following a bout with stomach cancer at his Pittsburgh home. He was 74.

He donned his trademark sneakers and zip-up cardigan while singing, "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood," for the last time in December 2000 for his final new show.

Rogers is survived by his wife, Joanne, a concert pianist; two sons and two grandsons.

Plans for a public service have not been announced.
