A man who allegedly fled a Giant Eagle supermarket with hundreds of dollars worth of crab legs was arrested after a chase.

North Huntingdon police said the man walked into the store on Route 30 at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday and took more than $300 worth of Alaskan king crab legs in a wheeled shopping cart.

"They were in large frozen bags. There were several of them," said William Sombo, of the North Huntingdon Police Department.

Some employees chased the man through the parking lot, and three customers joined in the pursuit.

The man ditched the cart, ran through the parking lot of a nearby Kohl's department store and a patch of woods, and into Teddy's restaurant, police said.

"All of a sudden I saw police officers running through the kitchen and I was like, 'What the heck is going on?'" said Teddy's employee Natalie Glunt.

When police arrived, the man was barricaded in a restaurant bathroom and removed a layer of clothing in an attempt to change his appearance.

The man -- identified as Vincent Michael Scala -- was taken into custody and faces a retail theft charge.

Police said the man did not say why he took the seafood. "He has not said why, but this is the first with king crab legs," said Sombo.
