Grocery Store Wine Kiosks Temporarily ShelvedGov. Rendell To Further Examine IssuePOSTED: 5:52 pm EDT July 8,
2009 PITTSBURGH -- The Liquor Control Board's plan to sell wine via vending machines in grocery stores has been temporarily shelved over the concerns of Gov. Ed Rendell. The wine kiosks would scan a buyer's driver's license and use face recognition technology to verify the picture matches the buyer. The machines would also come equipped with a breath detector to make sure buyers are not inebriated.West Virginia has tried grocery store wine sales, but has clerks who can check IDs.The Liquor Control Board said the kiosks will be monitored by remote video and can cancel sales if something seems awry.A Rendell spokesperson said the governor still supports the idea but wants to further examine if the technology really works. No timetable has been set for when the kiosks could show up in grocery stores.
