Pittsburgh Teen Arrested In Pregnant Student's Shooting DeathShavaughn Wallace Had Just Finished 1st Year At IUPPOSTED: 9:33 pm EDT July 1,
2009 PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh police say an 18-year-old Chartiers man is at least one of the people responsible for the death of a pregnant college student, also 18, who was innocently killed in a barrage of bullets on the North Side.Lamon Street was arrested Wednesday when he appeared for a preliminary hearing on another case. He is accused of killing Shavaughn Wallace, 18, who was four months pregnant and had just completed her first year at Indiana University of Pennsylvania."She was playing cards. They ordered food, and when the food arrived, this perpetrator came from across the street and started shooting in every direction, and definitely, she was what detectives call an innocent victim," Pittsburgh police Lt. Daniel Hermann said. "As all the dozen people did in that area, when they hear the gunshots, everybody scattered."Wallace's mother, Carla Robinson, described the victim as beautiful, bright and determined to be famous one day, but she never thought her daughter's death would bring her that fame."I just burst into tears because I just didn't want her to become one of those victims that I would have to see months and years from now on bulletins saying who did it," Robinson said.Wallace was not the target of the May 22 shooting on Alpine Street, according to police, who said more arrests may be made as the investigation continues."It could have been just warring factions that one street may be targeting another street. We have these small gang wars in this area," Hermann said.Street's mother, Veessa Gale, insisted her son is not a gang member."I've never seen any evidence," Gale said. "My son is just very respectful. He'll give the next person the shirt off his back."Street is charged with two counts of homicide -- one for Wallace and one for her unborn child -- as well as carrying a firearm without a license and recklessly endangering another person."How does one human feel that he can take another person's life, and then continue to eat, sleep and live, do the things they do in an everyday living mode as if it didn't matter?" Robinson said. "You took not one life, you took two. You took an innocent child's life."It was not immediately clear if Street had a lawyer. He's being held without bond in the Allegheny County Jail.
