Police in McCandless Township said the man they believe robbed two women at the same PNC Bank ATM in McIntyre Square killed himself while police were trying to arrest him.

The Allegheny County medical examiner is still investigating the death of 27-year-old Jonathan Muhl, who shot himself when officers confronted him outside his home shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, McCandless Police Chief Gary Anderson said.

Police said they believe Muhl is the person who robbed two women of hundreds of dollars on two separate occasions at a PNC Bank ATM in McIntyre Square

In both cases, police said the suspect approached the victims with a gun and demanded $400 in cash.

The victims told police the robber ran away, but they were able to get a description of his car and clothing. Based on similarities in both cases, police were able to follow up on the information, which led them to Muhl.

"A similar car was used in both of the robberies. And the description of the suspect was consistent in both of the robberies. Detectives were able to identify a potential suspect. And we believe that at this point in the investigation he has been identified and he is no longer a threat," said Anderson.

Earlier, McCandless police had released surveillance photographs from the ATM. A man seen wearing some sort of Pittsburgh Penguins jacket and sunglasses robbed a woman of about $400 on June 21, police said.

A similar armed robbery was reported Sunday morning outside the same PNC Bank on McKnight Road.

Authorities said the robber in Sunday's incident wore sunglasses and dark-colored clothes -- similar to last Sunday's incident -- and fled in a black Chevrolet Impala.

No one else was hurt during the robberies or during the attempt to arrest Muhl.

While police said they believe they have the right suspect, officers said the investigation is continuing.
