Police said charges will be filed on Monday against the driver of an SUV accused of hitting a group of people on their bicycles and then fleeing the scene.

The collision involved an adult and two children in Greene County late Saturday afternoon.

Police said a group of people were hit by an SUV while riding bicycles in Greene County.

County emergency officials told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that the SUV struck the children at about 4 p.m. at Liberty Street and Browns Ferry Road in Carmichaels.

"He sure didn't stick around to find out whether they were living or whether they were dead, that's for sure," said Dennis Weir, a witness. "That's terrible. That's bad, really bad."

Investigators said witnesses were able to provide a good description of the vehicle.

Police said they arrested the driver, Stephen Dodson, of Carmichaels, about four miles away from the scene of the crash.

"I was on my way home from work and I seen them pulling a black SUV over on (Route) 21, right at the intersection of 21 and George Street, and I thought the police were being awfully rough with the guy, yanking him out of there, throwing him across the hood," Weir said.

The victims were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in West Virginia; at least one person was taken by LifeFlight helicopter.

State police told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that none of victims seemed to have life-threatening injuries.

Some residents of the neighborhood told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that the intersection can be dangerous at times.

"There ain't nowhere for those kids to get off the street to get down to the ballpark. If you're going down to the ballpark and you're going down the street, you're on the edge of the road, and you're going to get hit if somebody's not watching what they're doing," Weir said.
