State police in Fayette County said a man was seriously hurt when he tried to pass a truck using his all-terrain vehicle.

According to police reports, Joseph Thomas, of Hopwood, was driving an ATV south near the 300 block of Coolspring-Jumonville Road in North Union Township.

Police said Thomas, 24, was trying to pass a truck as what witnesses described as a high rate of speed when he lost control of the ATV.

Investigators said Thomas, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the vehicle and found lying in the driveway of a nearby home.

Thomas was airlifted to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV. Currently there's no word on Thomas' condition.
