Neighbors Unhappy With Stanton Heights, Garfield School PlansResidents Say They Weren't Consulted On Academy PlansPOSTED: 9:20 am EDT June 23,
2009 PITTSBURGH -- Some neighbors in Pittsburgh's Stanton Heights and Garfield neighborhoods said they are not happy with how the plans for a new school were handled. The Neighborhood Academy School would be built near Rosecrest and North Aiken Avenue. Concerned residents claim they were left out of the loop on the development and that the plans are coming as a surprise to them."No one resident on the streets that will be impacted was informed properly, at all, by the planning commission," said Stanton Heights resident Jean Bryant. However, a school spokeswoman tells a different story."We had community meetings as early as January. Some of the individuals who are currently protesting us have actually visited the school in our current location that we rent, toured the school and seen the plans for the new school. So it's not entirely accurate to say that we've left the community out of this," said Guinevere Anderson of the Neighborhood Academy. The Neighborhood Academy is a private school that helps low-income students prepare for college.
