2009 PITTSBURGH -- Three fire companies were called out to battle flames in a Homestead Apartment building. The fire broke out in the kitchen of a first-floor apartment shortly after 3 a.m. in the building on East Eighth Avenue.Fire crews from West Mifflin, Homestead and West Homestead were called to fight the fire, but crews said they didn't have to evacuate the building, thanks to a key piece of equipment."They have an exhaust system here that automatically kicks in. So it pulled all the smoke away from that particular fire wall," said Chief Bill Purifoy of the Homestead Fire Department. The fire was under control within about 15 minutes and no injuries were reported. The fire marshal is investigating what caused the fire.
