Pittsburgh Leaders Make Call For 6th Grade Mentors'Be A 6th Grade Mentor' Program LaunchedPOSTED: 5:30 pm EDT June 1,
2009 PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh and Allegheny County leaders are issuing what they describe as the region's largest-ever call for volunteer mentors.The initiative aims to recruit hundreds of mentors to work with sixth graders in Pittsburgh Public School beginning in the fall.Mentors are asked to commit to the program for one year.Mentors and students will meet for 45 minutes per week during the school year and communicate by mail and e-mail during the summer.The United Way created the "Be a 6th Grade Mentor" initiative alongside the Pittsburgh Youth Futures Commission and the Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
