Thirty-five full and part-time employees at Pittsburgh's WAMO were laid off Friday as Sheridan Broadcasting prepares to sell the radio station.

Known as "Pittsburgh's Home for Hip Hop and R&B," the station is expected to switch over to a primarily religious format.

WAMO-AM, WAMO-FM and WPGR-AM will all be included in a sale to St. Joseph Ministries.

WAMO public relations director Russell Bynum said it is not known when the switch will be completed.

Sheridan Broadcasting will still continue to operate.

WAMO-AM began in 1948 as WHOD before switching its call letters in 1956.

The "AMO" refers to Pittsburgh's Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers.
