Animal Rescue League Aiding Struggling Pets During Bad EconomyShelter Establishes Fund For FoodPOSTED: 8:25 pm EDT April 30,
2009 PITTSBURGH -- Employees at the Animal Rescue League of Pennsylvania have started a fund to help people feed their pets so that they may remain in homes and out of shelters as the number of abandoned animals increases during tough economic times.Mac, a pit bull-terrier mix, was dropped off at the East Liberty shelter when his owner could no longer care for him.Mac has an orthopedic condition in his legs that will eventually prevent him from being able to walk if surgery isn't performed.Seeing Mac's condition, those at the shelter created a fund for him and any other animals that may need surgery in the future."He's not in any pain at the moment. He doesn't immediately need the surgery, but our immediate need is to find him a home so that we can schedule the surgery and then we can have a place where we know he'll be receiving the care he needs so that he can heal properly," said Tifanie Tiberio of the Animal Rescue League. While volunteers continue to do their best for Mac, he can't get the operation until he's adopted.
